Journée à l’Université de Nairobi (écrit par Gabrielle Engli)
Bonjour Canada! Aujourd’hui, après une nuit complète de sommeil, on est allé à l’Université de Nairobi (campus Kikuyu). À notre arrivée, nous avons été reçus par le directeur de l’université, des membres de la Faculté d’Éducation ainsi que des étudiants de la maîtrise. On a écouté des discours à propos de ce que l’université faisait et à propos des différents programmes. Puis notre groupe d’étudiants est allé à la bibliothèque pour discuter avec les étudiants de la maîtrise du programme d’éducation de l’Université de Nairobi. Les enseignants sont restés ensembles pour discuter entre autre de partenariat possible entre l’Université de l’Alberta et l’Université de Nairobi, ainsi que du rôle du Campus Saint-Jean avec son « projet Kenya ».
Il semblait y avoir un peu de confusion sur les raisons de notre présence. L’université pensait qu’on était là pour les aider à commencer un programme d’échanges pour leurs étudiants dans le but d’étudier au Canada. Ils étaient un peu déçus qu’on ne pouvait pas trop les aider avec leurs intentions, mais on a quand même appris beaucoup au sujet de leur système d’éducation et des programmes qu’ils offrent. On a visité un peu l’université et on a pris beaucoup de photos avec les nouveaux amis qu’on a faits. Tout le monde ici est vraiment content et les gens font l’expérience de beaucoup de nouvelles choses. On s’ennuie des gens de chez-nous et on a hâte de revenir à la maison pour vous raconter tout ce qu’on a vécu!
Moments « déséquilibrants »
• On regardait une vache qui était si mignonne… oh non, des personnes la conduisent à l’abattoir au coin de la rue…
• Des enseignants à l’université avaient des téléphones cellulaires qui sonnaient pendant nos réunions. Il y a même eu une personne qui a répondu au téléphone pendant qu’il nous faisait une présentation…
• On a vu un chameau

A day at the University of Nairobi (written by Gabrielle Engli)
Hello Canada! Today after finally having a good night’s sleep, we all went to the University of Nairobi (Kikuyu Campus). When we arrived, we were welcomed by the Principal of the University, different Faculty members of the Education Department and grad students. We listened to speeches which explained what the university was about and the different programs they offered. Then the students went to the library to discuss with the grad students from the Education Department at the University of Nairobi. The teachers stayed in the room to discuss possible partnerships between their respective university, as well as the role of Campus Saint-Jean in the « Kenya Project ».
There was a lot of miscommunication with the university about why we were there. They thought we could set up a program for them to have their students come to Canada. They were disappointed when we could not help them with their goals but we did learn a lot from them about their school system and university programs. We then got a tour of the different offices and took many pictures with all the new friends we made. Everyone is having a great time and experiencing many new things. We miss everyone back home and can’t wait to come back and tell you more stories.
Surprising moments of the day :
• « Oh, look at the cow, she is so cute… Oh no, there’s the slaughter house around the corner… »
• Many professors had a cell phone at the university and they were going off during our meetings. A professor even answered his phone while he was giving his speech
• We saw a camel
